Dolphin echolocation much better than man-made devices

Josefin Starkhammar was recently featured the BBC magazine FOCUS (Science and Technology, issue 324) with her exciting research into the echolocation of dolphins. The ultrasound beam that dolphins can emit is more sophisticated than previously thought which Dr. Starkhammar has shown in previous research. She has now, together with Prof. Maria Sandsten and Isabella Reinhold, developed the tools to analyze the components of the dolphin echolocation beam. She believes the new understanding of dolphin ultrasound can help improve human devices for echolocation both in diagnostic ultrasound as well as marine sonar.
