Assessment of bone quality

Fracture repair is a highly complex process. Despite extensive research, delayed healing and non-unions are encountered in 5-10% of all fractures. Fracture healing is especially complicated in elderly patients with osteoporosis. Hence, effective treatments of fractures in these patients are essential. Recently developed drugs (bone morphogenetic proteins and bisphosphonates) have the potential to improve the healing outcome of these fractures. However, more in-depth analysis methods are needed to evaluate how the drugs affect the quality of the repaired bone tissue. 

Our research aims to develop methods that can better assess bone quality, specifically in newly regenerated bone during fracture repair to determine the future potential of these novel biological drugs/treatments. In close collaboration with the Division of Orthopedics, we use three animal models; the bone chamber, the fracture healing model and the critical defect model in rats. The evaluation methods include micro-Computer Tomography (microCT), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) as well as mechanical testing (e.g. 3-point bending).  Some of these experiments are being carried out using synchrotron facilities at MAX-IV in Lund, Sweden, and the Swiss Light Source (SLS) in PSI, Switzerland or neutron facilites at Swiss Spallation Source (SINQ) at PSI, Switzerland.
